<br />
Hello!!<br />
<br />
How is spring treating you?<br />
<br />
I confess, I am guilty, I got hit by the spring fever, I have neglected the blog and the inside of the house, I have been up to gardening, OH the outdoors. I love flowers, I love gardening and I was so excited to get going and making the outside pretty that back in February I started some seedlings indoors, I took one of the bedrooms and made it a "green house"; Back in the fall, even before we closed on the house, I got risky and planted hundreds of perennial bulbs and a few baby trees, if anything would have gone wrong with the closing my plan was to go back one night and dig everything up, steal my own bulbs and trees :-)<br />
<br />
With the spring fever I am suffering and with my working hours/commute, I was left with the weekends and week nights, after 7pm, to beautify the outside which means, no time for the inside, hey, have to carve some sleep time out of my day.<br />

Now that the outside of the house is looking better, everything is flourishing and after <strike>I was given an ultimatum</strike> agreeing with DBF, it was time to come back inside and finish our entryway, I had left everything the way it was in the last post, no, it was worst. I had started painting the doors, the doors were primed with two coats of Kilz Premium and 2 coats of Valspar paint and primer ultra white semi gloss, but oh those doors were such a pain to paint, that I just couldn't stop tending to my plants and bring myself back to apply another coat of paint, the scene was depressing: Closet doors against the walls waiting to be painted and hung back, newspaper pages under the doors, lights hanging from the ceiling, a real mess, talk about unwelcoming entryways.<br />
<br />
This weekend we finally resolved to install the new lights and I finally decided to finish painting the door and finish making our entryway pretty.<br />
<br />
Remember the wall that almost drove me nuts? here it is now:<br />

Aren't things looking pretty? Tino agrees!<br />
<br />
<br />
I love the beautiful chandelier. Well, another confession I have to make today, not that I have not say it before (<a href="http://ourthriftycharminghome.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-foyer-welcome.html" target="_blank">here</a>), I have a fascination with glitz, always have, if it was up to me, I would be living in a crystal bubble filled with sparkle, like the holiday ornaments, but since I can't, then I am just "blinging up" everything I can, I think the most beautiful way to bring glitz into the space is with crystal lights. I ordered this girl last year, as I have said before, I dedicated my longs months waiting on the closing to gather things as they came.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBPJk37VymR2VJkSPAs6yYgV56mgVJdCeKwdb9kL1u7oy1d-pFn7BtEvUmcjG3xxDq0aiBxf0gWqY1JIg8IInX0d2hckYtH7lIh6SGyxGJCQBzu9pCupzdeUFZsqHTuYa2N3OSjV9FvQE/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1"><span style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBPJk37VymR2VJkSPAs6yYgV56mgVJdCeKwdb9kL1u7oy1d-pFn7BtEvUmcjG3xxDq0aiBxf0gWqY1JIg8IInX0d2hckYtH7lIh6SGyxGJCQBzu9pCupzdeUFZsqHTuYa2N3OSjV9FvQE/s200/photo+2.JPG" width="158" /></span></a><span style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"> </span><br />
She came in a box, in pieces, like a puzzle, it was<br />
so much fun to put all the crystals together, yes I am sure it's a she, no male item is glittery and shiny.<br />
<br />
I love the ambiance it ads to the space, surreal!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYjT8wwx7Ozlwz0f3kwOyJ3Ed0b5fVCiqBtNLTWoGL8SH3bAL8RPG_5b-0VMBiq_OHTCt7jZm14LB0Ls-RaD4fr5ZaADR0nfK5-hTFRN8lixlahNYt_ga1pKqooBlnWvFNiPNWAyPdM6k/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYjT8wwx7Ozlwz0f3kwOyJ3Ed0b5fVCiqBtNLTWoGL8SH3bAL8RPG_5b-0VMBiq_OHTCt7jZm14LB0Ls-RaD4fr5ZaADR0nfK5-hTFRN8lixlahNYt_ga1pKqooBlnWvFNiPNWAyPdM6k/s200/photo+3.JPG" width="151" /></a>There is another one, different but in the same style, for the little hallway going to the living room, but unfortunately we didn't have the time to get it up this weekend, perhaps now that DBF is on vacation for over two weeks, a lot of things in the house will be magically done while I am at work ;-)<br />
<br />
The little console table is one of my thrifty finds, the vintage iron and glass table has been with me for over 5 years now, purchased at that sale at that place that rents props for TV and movie productions I have mentioned <a href="http://ourthriftycharminghome.blogspot.com/2013/01/mocha-sectional-and-other-details.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
The lamp is a "Nate Berkus for Target" find, it was on clearance and the other accessories are either Pier1 or HomeGoods (my happy place). I don't know if anyone have noticed, but I have a problem with finding pictures to add to my frames, almost all the picture frames through the house are "artfully" decorated either with one of those pictures of people you don't know which come with the frame or with the pertinent store logo.<br />

Thankfully that was easily resolved, we found the mercury glass ones, I love the vintage look on them. I also added a second one to the door to make things even.<br />

In another subject, don't you freak out when you do an internet search and suddenly every page you go to you get bombarded by little pop up ads with exactly the same item you were looking at, or some suggestions that you might be interested in? It totally freaks me out, but in this occasion it was all for the good of design that it happened. I was looking for area rugs, did not find what I was looking for then moved on, then by the side of my eye, right there on the screen, I saw the word "Flor" with a picture of a rug, it then hit me that I have seen it in another blog, "<a href="http://www.inspiredbycharm.com/" target="_blank">Inspired by Charm</a>" (you guys should go and visit, you will fall in love with it and with Michael). The little area rug, is not a rug, it's Floor tiles from the <a href="http://www.flor.com/" target="_blank">Floor store</a>, what an awesome concept, it allows you to design your area rug or to carpet your entire floor in any way or color you want, the possibilities are unlimited and they are very easy and fun to put together.<br />

I have no idea, no the sightless idea of what the previous owners were intending to do when they decided to use some sort of silicone caulk or sealer or whatever it is they used in the walls, what a disastrous mess. The worst part? it was all over the place. They had opened a door under the stairs to be used as storage area, that was genius; the way they did it? not so genius. The wall is not straight by any means and the door is wrongfully installed and so on. Some genius thoughts were needed to make things look right.<br />
<br />
A couple of weeks ago, at the same time that we were working on the living room, we decided to embark in the: "Lets have a welcoming entrance project", lets see how things are turning out.<br />
<br />
The first thing we had to do was to figure a way to get rid of all the silicone and to fill all the holes, cracks, dents, etc. We had two options: 1- take the drywall down and do it again or 2- Spackle, tons of spackle. We went with option #2.<br />

Here is what my idea was back in the summer, last year... Not much as you can see, just plain white and gray walls. Please disregard the Asian style console, it was the only fitting piece of furniture available through the application I was using. Also, the stairs are a dream for now, it is all carpeted and is going to stay like that for a while, we dislike the carpet much but we have to focus on one project at a time, it will help us keep the little sanity we have. </div>

I have always loved dramatic colors, and I wanted to create drama as people come into the house, the choice for the entryway was a very dark blue (what a surprise, blue again) accented with the same very dark blue glittery stripes, which translate to a lot of measuring and painters tape. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When applying the tape, you have to be very careful because all imperfections will definitely show and if one stripe is bigger than the other, it will also show. It takes a lot of measuring and patience to do it. </div>

Here is the wall all ready for the glittery stripes, the blue in the painters tape looked so pretty that I almost wanted to leave it just like that, and DBF was loving it so much that he might have repeated about 100 times how much he liked the two blues together, to just leave it.<br />
<br />
The trick to using painters tape, so I learned from reading numerous blogs, is to use the same color as the base color before painting with the accent color, that way the tape will be sealed to the wall with the same base color and there will be no bleeds. So I started to do just that, using a lot of paint to make sure to get a good seal... but maybe too much and panic started to settle when I noticed the painters tape starting to wrinkle. OH NO! Maybe I was applying too much paint so I changed how much paint I was using, more is not always better.<br />

<br />
Wise decision since the tape stopped wrinkling, at that point I wish I would have listened to DBF and keep the wall just like it was, all blue taped.<br />
<br />
The next step was to apply the glittery paint, made by mixing the Valspar signature paint with Valspar Paint Crystals. What I love about mixing my own, is that you can decide how much glitter you want to use, but I love glitter so I obviously used a lot :-) So much that the walls looked "silverish" gray instead of the dark sparkled blue I wanted to achieve.<br />

<br />
Instead of getting disappointed, I just decided to settle for whatever color the outcome after the paint cures would be, then after removing the tape right way, because I know better that if left there for long the paint will peel when taking off the tape, I was very cautious when removing the tape too, but regardless, the paint started to come off where spackle had been applied, yes, I made the stupid mistake and didn't primed the walls, again. If you might remember, I didn't prime the family room and it ended up costing me 5 coats of paint. I think I have finally learned my lesson, prime Sobe, always prime.<br />

Not a good feeling, if you know what I am talking about.<br />
All the hard work, gone to waste. Impossible!<br />
<br />
<br />
I had to rush out to "Family fun day", there was not time for fixings. That night after returning home, I started to feel much better; the "silverish" gray was turning into darker blue and, no matter how much patience was needed, I was determined to fix the chips, instead of painting everything over.<br />

It took a good deal of patience but we got it done. No painters tape was needed, just the small angle brush and some of the same paint colors used, oh, you also need to hold your breath for what it seems like eternities at a time in order to be able to control your pulse.<br />
<br />
The sparkled color is still not the final color, its been a couple of weeks after these pictures were taken, after the paint cured it became a few tones darker.<br />
<br />
There is a lot more progress done to what is shown in this post. Right now we are painting the coat closet and pantry doors which were just as you can see in the picture below.<br />

This little hallway seems to have taken for ever to be done, but we are also doing outdoor work; every time the weather cooperates a bit and we are not at work we run outside. So far DFB has been very successful power-washing the concrete floor and pool deck, cleaning the pool and fertilizing the lawn, is all coming back to life.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I in the other side, have been very busy planting flowers as a continuation to all the bulbs planting I did in the fall, setting up raised beds and starting vegetables and flower seeds indoors.</div>

We cant wait to have everything ready to show you guys in another post. </div>

Every time we were working on an area of the house, things would get moved to "there"; I don't know what logic we have been using to do that, there is a big picture window from which our neighbors can see the entire dinning room and living room, yet, it was a big mess for months.<br />

Maybe because it is close to the front door but any package that will get delivered to the house will end up in the living room, that includes ladders, power tools, huge boxes with furniture, you name it. I am certain that until last weekend our neighbors thought we were the hoarders of the blog; the window is big, yet, there were so many boxes pilled up that you couldn't see anything inside, only cardboard and cans of paint. </div>

Here is a picture of part of the LR how it was, yuk, there is the green again; don't get me wrong, I like green, but that color is not my taste, it's just blah, unispiring. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
To the right is the picture window, I am convinced that the window might be one of the reasons I liked the house when we first saw it. I love light, tons of natural lights, dark rooms depress me. I need light in my life, I don't even like to watch TV in the dark at home and I like to keep tons of lights on at night, now when it comes to sleep I really need total darkness, weird, isn't it? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had a vision of the living room, maybe inspired by all the light. I saw it in blue and white and maybe a "redish" orange accent. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
I also decided that I wanted to add some antique or vintage piece, might it be a chair, a chandelier, something, so using the iPad program I designed the room in the pictures below.<br />

Then while hunting for that "vintage" piece, I came across these turquoise chairs on Craigslist, I still cant believe I paid what I paid for a pair of old chairs, $150 a piece; I was so excited about my find but then soon after I bought the chairs, I discovered thrift shop shopping. I was so disappointed that I paid so much money for them, I quickly fell out of love... To help my broken love, DBF doesn't like them, my FMIL (future mother in law) tried to talk me out of buying them, she went with me to pick them up, I am stubborn, so I got them anyway. To be honest I am glad I did, but every time I look at them I also think about the other, much bigger, nice, vintage chair I got at the thrift for $15, I want to cry. </div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had even forgotten about the chairs, they were pilled up in a corner in the garage.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After painting the LR, and being tired of having a love seat purchased and in its box for 32 days, I made my way to HomeGoods, on the hunt for chairs and then there it was at HG, the magnificent rug with colors that will match the other pieces I have been "hoarding" for the room, which at this point was turning more monochromatic (blue) than the white and blue I had originally dreamed of. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well, I did not buy the rug, I was not sure if it was too big, so I made my way home that Friday night, the rug was in my head all night and the entire day on Saturday so I woke up bright and early on Sunday, and made my way to Pier1 Imports to find chair and try to forget about it because let me tell you, if you see something at HG, grab it by a leg or by wherever but don't leave it for later, you will regret it, the chances of finding it again are almost 0.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I did not find the chairs that I was looking for at Pier1, but I did find the wall art that would perfectly go with the area rug I did not get at HomeGoods. It is made of glass mosaics, it has texture, color, flowers (yet not feminine) so beautiful. It was on clearance, which made it super better but, I did not get that rug which meant no art, unless there rug was still at HG?? Could it be? At about 7 miles away, I had to check.</div>

Not to make this post so much longer, I will leave you with some pictures of how things turned out to be, BTW, after I got the rug and wall art, I remember the chairs and they go perfectly with the room set up, so I don't regret getting them, even though I regret paying that much :-).</div>

Things that need to be changed: </div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>The fan, do not like ceiling fans inside a house at all, unless I live in the Caribbean, Florida or an island. </li>
<li>There is a side of the LR you don't see, not point, there is nothing in there, I have an idea of what I want, will post that later</li>
<li>Add more curtain panels to the window. DBF doesn't like that people can see inside the house, when we are having dinner it give us the feeling that there is people looking at us, still, I don't want to add blinds, so more see-through white panels it is, that way people will only be able to see silhouettes.</li>
<li>The bench doubling as a coffee table needs to go, it's only in there temporarily as I borrowed it from the family room, we are looking for something similar but not so narrow. </li>
<li>I need a comfy chair for the empty corner you see in the picture. </li>
</ul>
<div>
I hope you liked the post, share, comment, re-post, and don't forget, if you have any questions, ask away! </div>

</div>
It's being a while since my last post, almost two months or 52 days to be exact.<br />
<br />
Right after the last post, "Mocha sectional and other stuff", my imagination/ creativity fell in a deep hole. I was physically, mentally and emotionally drained. It took us 3 months to find a house we like and then it took another 8 months to finally close on it, eight long, exhausting and draining months; tons of phone calls and emails with agents, attorneys, bankers, arguments with DBF, desperation thinking we will never close and just wasted so much time, and so on... Then right after closing day the "lets make this house a home" started.<br />
<br />
I have to say that by waiting so long to close in the house we had time to plan, imagine, dream, pick colors, hunt for thrift shop treasures, etc., but by the time the day came, all the excitement came and went.<br />
<br />
The weekend after the family room was painted and the sectional came, DBF told me that he was going to go to Lowes right after work to pick a few things and my response was, you know what? Lets take a break, I can't anymore, I am exhausted from all of this, as much as I hate the mess, lets take a week off. His face transformed into relief; he has been wanting to take a break but since I was pushing so hard to get things done, he just went with it.<br />
<br />
A week went by and during the weekend we got the big 32" snow storm, it left me feeling blue and with no desire to work on the next project, the living room. The following week we decided to book a vacation. We take two vacations a year, February and September, but since 2012 was all about the house hunting, there was no vacation. We really needed one.<br />
<br />
The day before going on vacation I invited my family over to see the progress on the house, <strike>DBF </strike> went behind my back and invited his family over, he had a surprise, a big surprise, a fabulous engagement ring.<br />
<br />

<br />
We returned from our vacation almost a month ago and I promise I've been meaning to make a new post, but with an engagement ring came more planning, an engagement party and a wedding. I am an avid DIYselfer, I have been so excited thinking about all the things I want to make, I am not kidding you when I say that my head is all over the place, can even sleep thinking. <br />
<br />
Now I am done with the engagement party planning phase, a lot to do still, but everything is falling into place, so I manage to put my thoughts together and update the blog.<br />
<br />
We are currently working in the living room, walls all painted, blue! base board done, sofa arrived (but still in the box). We are also working in the entry foyer, more blue... Blue galore.<br />

DBF sectional is here, it really fulfilled all my fears (big, bulky, etc), and to make matters worse we got the wrong configuration delivered. See, "we" had planned for the sectional to be positioned against the wall, with the smaller section coming out a bit to the right, instead we got, small section against the wall and the longest part to the right, totally blocking the openest that I love about the room. When the delivery people left us I just froze and when DBF finally asked my opinion I threw the biggest tantrum ever, I started to cry as if I was a 5 years old which barbie doll was just taken away, I was panicking and it was not joke.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

P: I hate it too<br />
Me: sobs - crying - tears - tons of tears and sobs... What are we going to do now?<br />
P: I don't know<br />
<br />
With that, I went and sat by the kitchen to try to calm down, things were bad already so why make it worse? As the day went by, in between having friends help install a new storm door and making phone calls to see if we could exchange it, the sectional was moved in different angles until DBF came out with the below configuration, things were starting to look better.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The new set-up makes sense, the TV will be right across the wall, in the center and that way people wont have to turn their heads to the left to look at the TV; the room is now not as cluttered as it was looking with that big thing blocking the path to the kitchen and to be realistic, I will never get away with having a more modern, smaller piece of furniture in there, DBF has the word in the family room, is his space, so I just have to adjust.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijuaA6JoM3GfEjITplAC2ewZNTmNqPZaghH_SRAAozxwtR3Pwz-ZTM278zzqPZE5-Z82RjygWqNb4_i_8BPv4rk8Rsa4BY-mLTy6HYBLNgnZZ4H5SnG2B335drH2IJ_Vc3ClUNhF4P_LM/s1600/photo+3+(10).JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijuaA6JoM3GfEjITplAC2ewZNTmNqPZaghH_SRAAozxwtR3Pwz-ZTM278zzqPZE5-Z82RjygWqNb4_i_8BPv4rk8Rsa4BY-mLTy6HYBLNgnZZ4H5SnG2B335drH2IJ_Vc3ClUNhF4P_LM/s320/photo+3+(10).JPG" width="320" /></a>That same night I went on a trip to HomeGoods, which from now on I will just call HG, to pick up a few pillows and I found these two beauties, (sequin and Chevron), the other one I had previously ordered for another room, but now it matches perfectly in the family room, so he is staying there. I was convinced about the Chevron $7 find, the sequin one I was almost positive it was going back to the store, I only purchased it because I just loved it and it was in the clearance corner for $30. I really thought DBF was not going to like it, and I also thought that the $30 price tag was a bit excessive for a clearance pillow; until I got home, did some research and found the same brand and style for the economic price of $200, sighs... keeper!<br />
<br />
The next day we went to Ikea to look at some units which will be used for the build-in and then I found these other pillows, I am not too sure about them yet.<br />

I really wish our pictures would have true colors, and will not be as burned by the light as the picture above, as "good" as the iPhone camera is, it doesn't work for the purpose. While at Ikea we picked up the tiny glass desk, and put in a corner in the family room, since DBF is in there most times watching TV, I just set up my little working nook there. The chair was a find a few years ago, I got it at a "Props for Today" sale; is a place that rents props for movies and sitcom productions, they sell their inventory every now and then, so I thought it was cool to own a piece of furniture that was used in a TV show.<br />

Well, you didn't think there would not be a reuse in the room, did you? I feel in love with the "I don't know what it is" - I went to the back of the Thrift store to pick up a piece of furniture and there it was, in someone's hands, I started gravitating towards it when I hear a voice ask me, do you want it? I woke up from my dream and I asked, what? the nice gentlemen explained to me that he was just there dropping it off but he will give it to me if I wanted it, the BIG smile on my face, until the store manager realized she was about to lose a few bucks, came to me, took it from my hands and told me that if I wanted it I would have to pay for it, can you believe her nerve?? I do not like confrontations so I asked the "devil" dressed as a lady, how much she would want for it, and she just walked away. Excuse me? I yelled and her answer was, I cant tell you, when they price it it will be in the floor so wait for it if you want it. (insert eye roll in here)<br />

The nice gentlemen apologized and started telling me more about the piece: He got it from some friends as they were going to put it in the garbage, it was hand made some time ago, he was not sure how long ago, but he told me he was using it in his house and just bought some new furniture and since it is hand carved wood, he would rather to donate it instead of it going in the garbage, I agreed. Then I made my mother wait for me in the car while I ran to the front of the store to make sure the "lady" wouldn't just keep it, I scored it for $19.00, a lot if you consider I got a dinning table for $25, but I was not about to be defeated by that "lady" I know she priced it so I will not take it. I WON!<br />

The family room is looking better now, Tino supervised and he agrees, there is still more work to do but as it is now, I am liking it... and talking about Tino, do you remember I have two cats? Piscin is not interested in decoration at all, that is the reason she is never in the pictures.<br />

My headache, AKA sectional is comfortable and there are pictures to prove it, I am happy about the way is coming out, after all is the family room, where most of our time at home is going to be spent, it should be about comfort more than looks, don't you agree? </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next we need to work in a unit for the TV, the fireplace and accessorizing the room too, but that would be a total new post. </div>

More Family roomSo it was a really short weekend, little things that you think will take an hour, then become your entire day. The last post was about how little details are really important, this post is not any different; after DBF finished installing all the molding, it was time to finish the job, that means caulk and paint.<br />
<br />
Below is our family room the day we first saw the house, no molding, sage green walls and white ceiling, fireplace with a gold trim, a sample of a mantel, and a window with no paint on it, just natural wood (you can't see the window in this picture).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTE_Kdlmkwg2dAYntcEQuYfPbdv7sN5lfspaVdsdt_UuNQ5nn_AlVlhUmRDByBfDtpA_igfSBnGcnIvqRJf_ZRUNkgtXHC5c_Ekc0B_p8Hgg2y-ppA_ge9fCp1NedjLRQLc5brD0kiDX8/s1600/Diptic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTE_Kdlmkwg2dAYntcEQuYfPbdv7sN5lfspaVdsdt_UuNQ5nn_AlVlhUmRDByBfDtpA_igfSBnGcnIvqRJf_ZRUNkgtXHC5c_Ekc0B_p8Hgg2y-ppA_ge9fCp1NedjLRQLc5brD0kiDX8/s400/Diptic.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now there is white molding complementing our energizing butter yellow. The real difference between I never installed molding/ I don't know what I am doing/ no idea what is going to look like, and here is to our professional installed looking molding is called <u>caulk</u>, you can really see the difference in the picture below, still not painted but it looks much better than the "before caulk" picture. </div>

And then, there is the fireplace, I love the fact that we have a fireplace, but lord, I didn't like the way it looked before. I have a love hate relationship with gold in decorations, some times it looks great, some other times it looks, well, cheap.<br />

Since the doors were usable, and as I later will discover almost new, I took them off to clean before applying some spray paint love, and as I got to work I realized the very "normal" people that used to own the house forgot to take the plastic cover off the metal, which means, burnt plastic and a lot more work for me, see:<br />

When I got tired of trying the almost impossible, or maybe possible but not worth it, I just put the two doors in the dishwasher, gave them a good sanding and then used less than a can of Rust-Oleum high heat spray paint for $7.99. Here is what we have now :-) <br />

And that is all we got to do during the weekend, no that we could have done anymore, there is no furniture yet, but part of it have been ordered and the rest will be purchased soon. We are also adding some molding to the window by the fireplace; for some mysterious reason, DBF understood that I did not want molding there, can you imagine me saying something like that? <br />

Now, lets see:<br />

<br />
Back with more family room post. I have been working all week so little by little, we are getting there.<br />
<br />
We have this huge beautiful window with a nice view to our backyard. It
is unfinished which means we scored a brand new Andersen window with the
house, but as it is unfinished it needed some work before it could be
painted. <br />

I love to
live within 5 minutes of Home Depot and another 5 minutes to Lowes, but
when I <strike>discovered</strike> remembered the misfortunes, it was
actually too late to run there, thus I had to wait until the next day,
which brings on the next question: Why aren't hardware stores open 24
hours? I should start a petition asking Lowes to keep their store open 24 hours ;-P <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I also took off the vent covers before painting, and while they were off, I noticed how dirty they were, so they took a deep in soapy water only to discover that they were also kind of yellowish, I ran to the garage and grabbed the "best ever DIY tools ever" - spray paint and primer - and now they look brand new. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnBmO4UmRJ8ZEdDMtwybf3qnaMby1K5ylkB1voOUyEuZpHmfxZTMgPYxs0Juq05OuTGlakyl429wqDf5lQUFHkbJueIuerBZxsXCQXWvuGVIMfkyx0AARx2wO2MxeHAcYqJp0ItTusY0k/s1600/photo+2+%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnBmO4UmRJ8ZEdDMtwybf3qnaMby1K5ylkB1voOUyEuZpHmfxZTMgPYxs0Juq05OuTGlakyl429wqDf5lQUFHkbJueIuerBZxsXCQXWvuGVIMfkyx0AARx2wO2MxeHAcYqJp0ItTusY0k/s640/photo+2+%25283%2529.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
... and finally, yesterday night, DBF headed over to Lowes to pick up new molding, there was some molding in the room, OK, maybe like 1/8 of the room had molding and we were just going to buy the same, but it was too plain and blah! so we upgraded to something "fancier" <br />

It was great to wake up and see all the molding totally done, but I
was already running late and had no time to snap a picture for the blog. Tonight I should be able to finish painting the windows / doors frames and the molding, then there will come the next post, hopefully before the weekend's end. </div>

I have been asked where the new post is and believe me, is not that I did not want to post about it, the entire family room situation just got out my hands.<br />

I have a regular 9-5 job but my commute to work is about 5 hours a day, that makes it 14 hour days (70 hours a week) that leaves with just a couple hours before I go to bed but I try to do as much as possible when I get home, I thought the house will be painted in the past weekend and then over the week I would have time to work in details, boy was I wrong!<br />

Little did I knew I was totally wrong, again. <span style="text-align: center;"> </span><br />

Above is the dining room the first day we ever walked into the house, I never got over the fact that it has an slanted ceiling, of course I would have loved if it was a cathedral ceiling, but slanted? there is no symmetry. The picture below, makes the shape of the room so much worst,. I have no idea what the box is, it sits right under the stairs to the second floor, yet, it has nothing to do with it, is one of the great mysteries in the house that I can not wait to decipher.<br />

Here I was sampling the color to see how it will look through different times of the day, by the lights, against the lights, etc.<br />
The reason I choose yellow for the room is because is a color full of energy and since we will be spending most of our time in here it seemed like the way to go.<br />

To the side is what I call, a spackle mess, our guess is that there was a french door where there is now windows and the former owners didn't finished the job, there are little holes and spackle all over the place; my guess is also that they had a very deep love for nails, push pins, safety pins and anything that can go on a wall, as I started to fix the mess I realized more spackle was needed to conceal all the miniature holes int he walls, there must have been about 100 of them, I think they used to just hang all papers with a push pin. A reveal of our yellow ceiling, yes, I mentioned before how I really don't like the slanted ceiling so having some knowledge of color and shapes, it was discussed and decided that to make it look more even to just go with one color in the entire room was a savvy choice.<br />

This is when fate came in to prove me wrong, at about 1 am on that Saturday night and we ran out of paint after just doing the ceiling and that one little corner. All embarrassed to admit I was wrong, "because I have helped or painted every single place I have lived in since I was a little girl" I called DFB which was at work, his answer, "I told you so", don't we all love to hear that? Ha.<br />
<br />
Frustration settled in, I made drinks for my mom and my cousin which were helping me, (cousin painted the entire ceiling) and we all agreed that one more can should be enough, right?<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Within the next few days, DBF stopped by Lowes to pick up another can of paint, got on to work, came to bed in the middle of the night to tell me: Honey, we ran out of paint! so I was WRONG again. The next morning when I was getting ready to work, I ran downstairs thinking that I must have had a bad dream, and "surprise" an empty can and a mess all over the place, how can this be possible, how?? 2 gallons of paint and the walls were not even entirely covered. He must not know how to paint? I cant be wrong that many times. Anyway, that same day, he headed to the hardware store, grabbed a third gallon of our now-hated "Like butter" and to attack the walls again. That night I was so anxious waiting for him to come over to tell me how gorgeous our walls looked that I couldn't even sleep, I was about to get up to get ready when he came to the room to announce, I am finished but I don't like the way the walls look, once again, I went downstairs, observed the walls and decided that after the paint cures I should be all fine.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">After 2 days, the paint is supposed to have cured already. I don't know if you can see how bad the walls were after 2-3 coats, it looked dirty, grayish , a nightmare!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Yesterday I got up bright and early and told DBF that I was going to apply another coat to the walls, he just looked at me and told me: "You will need to get to Lowes again", I swear I almost passed out: </span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Me: in disbelieve, why, the rollers are no good anymore?</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Him: no, we need paint.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Hahaha, should this mean I was wrong 4 times? I had no other solution than to get in my car and drive to pick up our 4th and last? can of paint. While in the store, no one was around the paint department and the store manager came to help, his first reaction when I told him I want just a gallon was surprise, he then asked me if I have already applied tow coats of primer and that I will need two to three coats of that paint, (doing the math, that is 5 coats). I asked him why primer since the paint has the primer on it so he said it is in the instructions because of the type of color it is, I almost wanted <strike>to kill</strike> scream at the guy that mixes the paints, this was our 4th gallon and I was just learning about this warning that comes up in the screen when you are about to mix the paint. UGH! </span></div>

The god news is that we are finished painting the walls, and I am in love, I like the color so much, is so vibrant, exactly what I was expecting, exactly like what I envisioned when I said I wanted yellow, I want a butter yellow, and I was able to find a color called just like that - Like Butter. The slanted ceiling is still there, but since is the same color it doesn't bother me that much.<br />

The bad news is that the family room is not finished, not even close to be finished, we still have to deal with the windows frame, to apply and paint molding, to find furniture, to do "build ins" and to frame the fireplace.<br />

Hope everyone had a really nice and merry Christmas. Finally back with more dinning room posts:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have been totally in love with Ghost chairs and back in the early summer I spotted a version, they were on sale ($138 a pair, after all coupons, discounts, etc - Originally $289 a pair), I thought and thought about it and since we didn't have the house yet, I consulted it with DBF and his answer was: we need paint, we need a new floor, we need...we need, so reluctantly, I just let it go. After that day, every day I went online to check on the price and to my surprise, they went back to full price by the next day, I almost wanted to cry. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
From then on it became a full on obsession, I would check everyday first thing when I opened my eyes in the AM, before getting off bed, and then again last thing before I closed my eyes at night. As much as I loved them, I am not one that would pay full price for anything. It took me a full good 5 months until SURPRISE, I spotted them on sale again, not the same great deal, but after sale and coupons I was able to get it for, well, a couple more $20's per pair, still a good deal, it was black Friday and I was almost sure I will not get the same deal again. Shh, I plan on getting two or four more to have as spare if the deal ever comes back around. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The things I love about the Ghost chairs is that even though they look stylish and "fake" you can sit on them, they look like they will last longer than regular wood chairs, the room doesn't look crowded with furniture, and I promise, they will not break on you, they are supposed to hold up to 1K pounds. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After I purchased the chairs, DFB confessed he has been checking on the chairs almost daily because he knew how disappointed I was. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When we first came to see the house, we did not like the full mirrored wall in the dinning room, the biggest wall in the room looked like it was taken out of a 80's movie; it was discussed to take down first thing when we move in, then as the days passed by I realized that it was really an added bonus, small room + mirrors= Illusion of a bigger room. As you can see in the picture, it actually looks like we have two consoles, two dinning tables, two lamps and two room testers (cats).</div>
